Perfecting Flight –
Our Advanced Beginner's Course

Become an independent pilot

The Perfecting Flight course is aimed at students who have completed the initiation course and at least one progression course (it is recommended to have completed two progression courses and one SIV course). It is also aimed at pilots who wish to have more mastery in the different areas of interest: different types of flight, better understanding and interpretation of flight conditions and correct decision making, more tools to control mishaps, better use of conditions and efficiency?
In short: toprogress towards an integral autonomy.

Goals

The main goal of the Perfecting Flight course is for you to become an independent and well-prepared pilot. Through a minimum of ten flights, the instructors will propose to the student different situations and how to face them.
Additional goals: creating flight plans according to different flight goals, evaluating flying sites and conditions, calculating safe routes, evaluating take-offs and landings, refining ground handling (front and reverse), improving thermal efficiency and active piloting.

A free flying paradise

The Spanish Pyrenees are a paradise for free flight, but few places like Castejón de Sos and the Benasque Valley offer such a diversity of scenarios for perfecting our flying technique.
Even though we will focus on thermal flight, throughout the week we will encounter different wind conditions, directions, thermal and thermodynamic flights, wind gradients, takeoffs and landings with and without wind, etc. This variety of flying conditions will help us to develop as independent pilots and improve our decision-making processes.

Advanced Training

Searching to become autonomous in flight is necessary so that we no longer depend on an instructor, and it is the previous step towards distance flying. At these levels it is essential that the instructors possess increasingly advanced technical skills, as well as the ability to transmit the necessary mindset required for autonomous flight.
We want to train pilots who are conscious of what they are doing, confident in their decision-making, technically sound and prepared to face the challenges of paragliding without assistance.

Perfecting Flight course program

Ground handling practice

Advanced ground handling control of the wing.
Reverse launch control: techniques with strong wind, techniques with wind on a slope...
Takeoff practice: with the wing bunched up, lateral ("cobra")...
Finding the stall point and spin point.

theory lessons

Analysis of state curves, stability and inversions and their effect on thermals, evaluation of different areas, incidents and resolution process, recommended equipment according to type of flight.

High-altitude flights

Pre-flight evaluation of conditions and flights in a variety of conditions.
Exercises to improve technique and efficiency in thermal flight (control of brake range when centering lift) and thermodynamic flight, seeking to improve slope approaches and/or top landings in suitable places and conditions, when possible.
Introduction to cross-country flying in "follow the instructor"mode.

Maneuvers

Roll control and recovery from moderate collapses.
Use of the rear risers.
Big ears with speed bar, turns with big ears and speed bar.
Top landings, slope landings and others.
Estimating glide ratio.
Complex approaches, using big ears during the approach.
Compensation of gradients, flare improvement.

DURATION

The Perfecting Flight course takes place from Monday to Friday (five days), with flights during the mornings and the afternoons.
